Besides the individual and regular squad training that is the mainstay of Surfcoach.com’s training programs, surf brands – Billabong Australia and Rip Curl Australia, have contracted Martin to run development camps for their elite junior surfers in 2005. These ran off without a hitch, with all surfers attending, finding the training highly valuable.

New DVD from Surfcoach.com

“Winning Thoughts” is a new DVD available from Surfcoach.com in 2005. It has been produced to help competitive surfers stay focused on the essential aspects of their performance, for the competitive heats duration. Thinking the right thoughts during the competitive heat, can help surfers achieve their competitive goals.

The production outlines 4 key thought strategies that a surfer can incorporate into their heat planning to use while in the water. The four thought strategies are:

Technical Thoughts, Tactical Thoughts, Positive Self-Talk, and Mental Rehearsal

Just like undertaking fitness and technique training, surfers can also train their minds to achieve elite performances.

“I improved my WQS rating by 50 places after I started using these strategies in my heat planning and during my actual heats” - 2005 WQS men’s competitor

“Winning Thoughts” is a co-production between Martin Dunn and Dr Michael Martin. Michael, one of Australia’s leading sport psychologists, who as a surfer, former 3x National Scholastic title winning coach, and currently head of the Performance Psychology Department at the Australian Institute of Sport, would be the leading authority on what to think to achieve elite performances.

With Martin’s 20 years of on-the-beach experience and Michael’s experience working with national and Olympic athletes from a broad range of sports, “Winning Thoughts” provides the world’s best advice on what a surfer should think when competing.

Innovative Video Analysis service going from strength to strength

Surfcoach.com has been pioneering distance coaching for surfers for 4 years now. The service, where surfers send a video or DVD to Surfcoach.com for their surfing performances to be analyzed, has been helping surfers worldwide to improve their performances. Once the videotape has been received, Surfcoach evaluates the performances and provides a report and coaching videotape for the surfer to view at their home beach before surfing. The prepared videotape then acts like a surrogate surf coach that they use whenever they want to work on their surfing. The more they view the tape, the more powerful the learning.

Each tape usually contains between 3 – 6 skill presentations that highlight errors in a surfer’s technique or their decision making that was discovered from the supplied tape. As can be seen from the picture here, the tapes are produced using split-screen technology, where the training surfer is compared to another surfer who is performing the skill more correctly. A voiceover and drawings on-screen are also apart of every presentation.

The above picture is an actual screenshot from a presentation suggesting the surfer on the left should turn their head more and look back to where they performed their entry bottom turn when performing their forehand snaps. This turning of the head allows the arms and trunk to rotate maximally, creating maximum “drive” at the end of the snap, effectively allowing the surfer to maintain their speed throughout. Limited turning of the head causes the surfer to stop at the end of the manoeuvre, a major fault that many surfers have when performing forehand snaps.

Surfers who are utilizing this service come from the full spectrum of the surfing population and from all points on the surfing globe. From Australian WCT surfers who want to fine-tune their already impressive skills to grommets from South Africa who want to learn how to perform a better cutback. From over 40 year old surfers in Japan and New Zealand who want to perfect those moves that have always frustrated them, to female members of national junior teams who are leaving no stone un-turned in their quest for the ISA World Title in Huntington Beach later in 2005.

The reason they are sending the tapes, is simply because Surfcoach.com is the world’s leading authority on modifying surfing technique and the advice they receive through the prepared tape can fast-track the developmental process.

Ryan Hawker, pictured left, New Zealand’s under 14 years boys champion in 2005, uses Surfcoach.com’s video analysis service a number of times each year to accelerate his development.

Training Camps at Old Bar

Surfcoach.com runs live-in training camps mid-week throughout the year. These camps run for 3 or 4 days, depending on the requirements of the surfers attending and they stay at Old Bar Beach Bed & Breakfast www.oldbarbb.com.au, a surfer friendly accommodation business. The main focus of these camps is to hone the skills of camp participants in the vital areas of surfing technique and decision-making. These fundamental skills are the cornerstones to achieving elite performances.

The training is a mixture of surfing focusing on technique, training drills to highlight and rectify performance mistakes, and if required – simulated competitive heats to work on tactical and psychological skills. All sessions are videotaped for later viewing and discussion on how the surfing performances can be improved. What is worked upon depends on the developmental level of the camp participants.

Women’s camp in February 2005. Attending - 5x Japanese professional women surfers [ Mizuki Hagiwara, Sayuri Ichinose, Erina Taniguchi, Yuri Saito, Shuko Fukutani ], Easkey Briton – 2005 Irish Women’s Surfing Champion, and Lindsay Noyes - # 2nd, 2005 Australian Pro Junior Series.
