  Self-Paced Surf Training...
How does it work?

Surfcoach.com allows a surfer to choose a surfing skill that they feel could be improved or one that they would like to learn how to perform. Once they receive the card / cards through the mail, they are able to take it to their local beach to target those skills for performance improvement.

The training process is straight forward:

Select and purchase the "self-paced" training cards or training packages from Surfcoach.com

Take the training cards to the beach, assess the surf conditions, and decide

which skill you should work on. Read the card, daily, before entering the water
to remind yourself of the key cues that go into the successful completion of the skill.

Work on the selected skill with 100% commitment for 40 minutes - 1 hour. Try to perform it as well as possible.

As soon as possible after your surf, evaluate your performance and record your assessment in the "Progress Book" provided. This may be on the beach or when you arrive home.

Next training surf, go through steps 2-4 to work on that skill again, and so-on until you perfect the manoeuvre. Alternatively, select a different skill [ which you consider suitable for the conditions ] and work on it to the best of your ability. Again, go through steps 2-4 if a different skill has been selected.

Why use these cards?

When a surfer decides to use the training cards, what the surfer is effectively doing is setting goals to target performance weaknesses. Goals focus a surfer's effort and concentration, making improvements in performance more likely. To achieve set goals, a surfer must:

levels_button_1.gif - 1283 Bytes have their goals at the forefront of their mind whenever they surf
levels_button_2.gif - 1307 Bytes put effort into their attainment
levels_button_3.gif - 1316 Bytes regularly evaluate how they are progressing towards their goals

Surfcoach.com's training card system does two of the above three actions. The cards allow the surfer to read about, and visualise how a skill should be performed, before they enter the water. When used daily, these cards remind the surfer what the key components are to achieve consistent success and give the surfer an understanding of the performance needs of the skills selected. This coupled with the self-evaluation provided through the use of the "progress book" [ supplied with the training cards ], help the surfer maintain focus and motivation towards improved performances.

The effort part of the above comes from the surfer. If a surfer is keen to improve their surfing skills they will achieve at a faster rate using this system. An added advantage of using this "Self-paced Training System" is that surfers can regularly assess how well they are improving, and what needs to be done in the future to achieve the goals they wish to obtain.

Surfcoach.com's training cards have been designed to effectively show you how to perform surfing skills with success. Incorporated in the design of each card are six distinctly different teaching methods, all combining to help you surf better. Through greater awareness of the manoeuvres components, and a knowledge of the theory behind successful completions, surfers are now able to improve their surfing at a much faster rate.

Example Card:

Goal setting and the evaluation of the performance shouldn't be underestimated by the developing surfer. Research in elite sport and business has shown that goal setting is a powerful directional and motivational technique that produces outstanding results. It keeps the athlete focused, while enhancing persistence and effort. Goal setting only works though, if there is regular feedback in relation to performance or progress towards the goal. It must be measured hence the "progress book" included in this training system.
